FAMILY ROOM, KITCHEN & BATH PICS OF OUR HOME

*CHECK OUT THE MY HOME PAGE FOR UPDATED PHOTOS*

So I decided to borrow my sister's camera (who is a photographer) and take a few pics of the house. DISASTER. I am not a photographer at all. She didn't trust me with her super nice lens and flash (which I totally understand - I don't know how to use them), so sans flash, zoom capabilities, and bad lighting this is what I got.

To counter my bad pics I will post the before pictures so mine don't look so bad!

Just a little back history - the house was built in the '50's and didn't have much updating. We hired Tom Fox to head up the construction and he was the genius who really figured out how to create a great floorplan from this awkward home. I thought we all worked really well together. It was a SUPER STRESSFUL remodel as I was pregnant the whole time and we had to move 4 times while it was being remodeled, but we are extremely happy with the end result.

We loved the view and the big windows of this room but it was an awkward space - long and narrow - so we knocked out this wall and extended the house about 300 ft, til the end of the covered porch. The covered porch had a good roof so we were able to use what we already had and didn't have to add on more roof (which is really pricey).
The fireplace had to stay where it was, which was fine, but as you will see in the kitchen pic there is a fireplace on the other side - but they aren't back to back, so it created a somewhat awkward fireplace/bookshelf situation.
The extra sq. footage helped make the space. I love wainscot so we had it done from the floor to the ceiling. Now I need to find some great artwork or a nice mirror for that space...
Lot's of empty wall space...

Because the room is so big we had an extra large couch custom made by Rocky Mountain Upholstery in a stain resistant fabric. I LOVE this fabric - everything has come out and it has a linen look. The pillows are Thom Filicia fabric made by Chelsea Lorimer.

I still need to find fabric for the window seat cushion. The chairs we bought at Home Again and had reupholstered by Rocky Mountain Upholstery. With kids the bleach white fabric was a gamble - but I remove spots with bleach and everything comes out! The roman shades are from Lowe's - they are Balli.

This is just the details of the fireplace. The sconce is from Circa Lighting (my FAV lighting store) and the stone on the fireplace is super white granite left over from the kitchen countertops.

BEFORE

White kitchen w/brass hardware. The backsplash is Thassos marble and the countertops are super white granite (which we have loved because it's not as porous as marble and more stain resistant).

I wanted some open shelving and a farmhouse sink. The sink is from Ikea and hundreds of dollars cheaper than other sinks. Because of the fireplace we had a narrow space for the kitchen which didn't allow for a traditional island. I LOVE this round island we did - it was risky because we hadn't seen it done before - but I love it. It's the perfect prep station.

another view of the kitchen

You can kind of see how we put the bench seat and table on the other side of the counter instead of having the L counter hang over and putting barstools at it.

The kitchen fireplace. I want to add some framed photos on the wall next to the fireplace and do put some sort of decor on the mantel.

This is the kitchen table w the bench that sits against the L counter of the kitchen. We really like having such a big dining space right next to the kitchen so when friends are over we can all fit and be part of the conversation. The table is from Restoration Hardware and the kitchen bench is custom from Rocky Mountain Upholstery
This is the guest bathroom that is right next to the kitchen dining area. Since it was such a small bathroom I wanted to do a more bold wallpaper - this one is Osborn & Little. My daughter calls it the "popcorn flower" bathroom.

I will post more photos as I have the time. I definitely want my professional photographer sister to take the photos next time so they look much better. I think I'll do the bathrooms next, and then the bedrooms. More to come - if you have any questions about anything we did with the house please feel free to send me an email!

  8. Thank you all for your kind compliments! To answer your questions...
    - the ottoman is also custom from Rocky Mountain Upholstery and a very affordable custom piece
    - the hutch is an inherited piece that I had refinished from Faux Design who specialize in unique paint finishes. That piece is a white wash black which almost gives it a Gray/blue tone. I love it.
    - and I will add a link so you can follow my blog. I'm so glad you want to!

  14. We are building right now....and I really need a picture of your fireplace with the TV above it. We just get a glimpse of it when you show the family room mantle. I'm trying to explain to my contractor how I want it built in a little. It looks like that is how yours was done. Everything looks beautiful. Great job!

  15. Marcie, I will be having better pictures taken of my house very soon. I will hopefully be posting them in the next couple of weeks! So sorry...

And the rug is a Madeline Weinrib rug from ABC Carpet & Home. I love it, but it's not the most practical rug I could have bought :)

And the name of the kitchen countertop is Super White Quartzite, I believe. It's part of the granite family but it is a quartzite (not man made - natural).

What is the color white that you used on the kitchen cabinets? We're in the middle of remodeling ours and I have finally talked my hubby into painting the cabinets white (they were an ugly oak and an ugly medium builder stain)..would love to know!! :-)

  23. Hi Marianne

So much hard work, thought and effort went into your home! Beautiful! I am in need of reupholstering my wing back chairs. I did a linen-rayon blend that has not held up too well. Would love the source of your hard wearing "look alike" linen on your couch. Thanks!

  36. Such nice comments! Thank you so much.

The fabric I used on my couch is from a company called SilverState fabrics. The pattern is Fenton and the color is Natural. It has a Nanotex permanent spill & stain protectant in the fabric so it's super stain proof. As I've already said I love this fabric!

We used the Arctic White from Benjamin Moore for our cabinets. I wanted a stark white for my cabinets to offset the linen white that my mouldings and walls are painted in.

Thanks again for all of your comments!

  40. Our kitchen remodel is moving along and it is very very similar to yours.
I am wondering if you found a great wall color to go with the super white granite and thassos. I only see a little paint around your window. I have been looking at the greige famliy but there are so many shades.

    1. It's just the white that my great room is painted, which is a 50/50 combination of BM Dove White + Glacier White. I do love a light gray. For a warmer gray I like BM Silver Satin and for a cooler or true gray I like BM Intense White. Hope this helps!

    1. We had it custom made by the same person who did our cabinets. They made the base and then we had our countertop fabricator make the top. Crate and Barrel has a really cute Carrara marble island if you don't have someone who can do custom.

Best of luck! Thanks for stopping by!
