BRASS HARDWARE - LOVE IT OR HATE IT?

If you've seen pics of my house you know that I love brass hardware. And hence my design business name...White and GOLD. Yes, I love all things gold, brassy and beautiful. Now I need to clarify that I love AGED brass, not necessarily polished 70's brass, although even 70's brass sometimes has it place (very rarely). Brass has made a major comeback in fashion and interior design. I think it's classy and timeless, but not everyone shares my sentiment.

As I work on my investor home projects for the unknown buyer I get a little push back on wanting to use brass hardware in the homes. This is where you come in. I need your honest opinions - do you love, kind of like, or hate brass hardware? Would you put it in your home?

Here are some pics to help you decide...

I really like the aged brass they use in this bathroom. It's more subtle.

This classic kitchen is the kitchen of the fashion designers Mark Badgley and James Mishka (btw - do you watch Project Runway Allstars? They were just on that and I LOVE that show!). Anyway, I love how this kitchen could be from 1980 or 2012. Brass is ageless...

Mixing metal finishes on hardware doesn't break any rules.
Here is a picture of my master bath hardware that mixes both chrome and brass.

SO...what do you think? Love it or hate it?

  1. It's growing on me... especially in jewelry. I had a gold phase, then a very long silver phase. I just pulled out my "vintage" silver and gold watch and I'm LOVING wearing both together.... It's so fun to mix it up... in home decor too! :)

  2. Love the jewelery...not a fan of the brass in the house. It makes me laugh though because my father and I always have this argument...he refuses to move on from the really dark wood and brass of the 70's. Although, I don't mind the aged brass in the bathroom.

  4. Not a big fan of gold or brass.
I wouldn't use it in my home.

However, I do think it looks nice in the second bathroom picture you have posted.

  9. I had it throughout my 80's classic house (came with switchplate and outlet covers too) but I've removed as much as I can and accented a lot with brushed stainless and black. My door hardware (handles and hinges) are all still brass and too costly to replace at this time. So I guess I'm a "forced mixer" but I'm not a fan of the brass look and if given a choice I'd say I'm in the "not lovin' it" camp and would prefer stainless or brushed stainless or even pewter! JMO
