MARBLE KITCHEN COUNTERTOPS

Marble kitchen countertops are beautiful! I love them. Published kitchens usually have marble countertops and backsplashes, but we don't live in magazines, we live in homes where we have children, grandchildren, messy spouses/partners/relationships. We spill red liquids and put acidic items on the counter, such as lemons, oranges, any fruit! So...is it really the best idea to have porous marble countertops in the kitchen where they can etch and stain? Or is the look of them worth being a little more careful?

I debated this very thing myself. I will show you what I ended up with, but let's look at the beautiful marble countertops that inspire us to put marble in our kitchens...

Beautiful images, right?! I could post a million more too. Marble is just gorgeous in the kitchen. But here's what happens when your marble etches, or stains...check out this whole post about the softness of marble and how to take care of it. (etching is what happens when acidic things get on marble)

This picture shows how with different sealants marble still etches and stains, but a good sealant can definitely help protect the marble.

Truth be told, I don't mind the etching all that much. What bothers me more is the staining and I was afraid with little kids I would have a problem with it. So as much as I LOVE marble, I decided to go with the Super White Quartzite or Granite. Also a great option is the Bianco Romano granite, which is more affordable than the Super White.

Here's a pic of my Super White which so far has been worth every penny.

In my investment properties I'm working on right now we were going to go with the Carrera marble but I know how high maintenance of a surface it can be, so we opted for a Cambria Quartz called Torquay. It's one of their new colors and I really like it. It's even better in person. Here's a pic of it installed.

I don't know if I've mentioned this before, but one of my favorite blogs, if not my most favorite blog, is MORE DESIGN PLEASE (I have it on my blog roll). They posted these beautiful digital wallpapers/murals by Catalina Estrada that I just had to share on my blog because they are so cool and unique. Can we say, Anthropolgie-esque?! (is that a word!!)

MR. CALL DESIGNS

In every issue of House Beautiful they highlight an up and coming designer. This month it was Jon Call of Mr. Call Designs. I don't usually highlight random designers like this but I really liked his work. When I went to his website his portfolio was limited but wonderful.

He says his company is "reinventing the modern American interior". I agree. Here are my favorite pics. I'll be staying in touch and am excited to see his future work...

KITCHEN HARDWARE - POLISHED OR BRUSHED?

One of my clients is currently trying to decide what hardware to get for her kitchen (with my help of course). Here's the dilemma that I'm sure many of you have run into - what finish should she have on her hardware? She likes the look of polished chrome but worries about it fingerprinting and looking messy/dirty. She also likes the brushed hardware and knows she won't have the problem of the fingerprinting, but the polished chrome would add dimension and reflection in the kitchen.

Have any of you faced this dilemma yourself? What did you choose? Do you have polished chrome in your home? What has your experience been?

BENCH SEAT CUSHION

My bench seat cushion came this morning! I took some quick pictures of it, but don't judge because I need to add pillows, etc. to finish the space off.

I love the fabric and I'm really happy with the comfort of the cushion. As with all cushions it needs a couple of days to settle into the space.

Now I just need to add pillows and some coral accents into my family room, since this is the first introduction of color to my predominately beige linen + white room.

I've been eying this console from Blu Dot for a long time. It's a lot more modern than the rest of my house, but that's why I like it, and that's why I'm hesitant. I think I might go for it and order it. It would tie the room together and I can put some great lamps on it and some pictures.

This console would go under my very large mirror...

Yes, that is my 3 year old daughter watching cartoons on the couch and sucking her thumb while her Mom blogs :)

So what do you think? Too risky to put such a modern console in such a traditional space?

WEEK IN REVIEW - 1.27

I'm sorry I have been slacking on my blog this week. It's been a busy week and frankly I've been feeling a little guilty about neglecting my two beautiful little girls a little too much with the new business, so the blog has suffered :) And here's my week in review...

First off, I've been spending time with these little heart-breakers!

But I've also been working hard on finishing another fix and flip house (Wall Street if you follow me on Pinterest). I spent almost 3 hours assembling this beautiful chandelier from West Elm...

(BTW, this chandelier looks as good in person as it does online. I know I'm always saying it, but I love West Elm!) I will be posting pics of this house this week.

I ordered this fabric from my favorite fabric store, SilverState Fabrics, for my bench seat cushion in my house. Rocky Mountain Upholstery is making it for me and I should be getting it this week! I'm so excited to see it finished...

I've also been looking for carpet for a runner for the two staircases in two of my projects. We are going to paint the stairs white and have a runner, similar to this picture.

I picked out carpet from Karastan called Berwick Tweed. This carpet is so amazing in person. I think the tweed pattern will look classic, yet dramatic, and be forgiving of dirt and wear.

I ordered some lights from Robert Abbey for my Avenues projects.

COLORFUL + BEAUTIFUL RUGS

One of my favorite rug companies is The Rug Company who makes this fabulous rug from designer Vivienne Westwood that I've been coveting for my office...

I think this would look very good underneath my inherited picture of a French Dauphin...(or according to my sister when she was little, a picture of my grandma)

But when I was reading my Traditional Home I noticed that The Rug Company had created a new line that has very affordable rugs and in such great colors! Prices start at $312 and they have sizes from 4 x 6 to 9 x 12. I want one of these for my own home!

Wouldn't these be so great in a little girl's room? I'm eying the yellow one...

BRASS HARDWARE - LOVE IT OR HATE IT?

If you've seen pics of my house you know that I love brass hardware. And hence my design business name...White and GOLD. Yes, I love all things gold, brassy and beautiful. Now I need to clarify that I love AGED brass, not necessarily polished 70's brass, although even 70's brass sometimes has it place (very rarely). Brass has made a major comeback in fashion and interior design. I think it's classy and timeless, but not everyone shares my sentiment.

As I work on my investor home projects for the unknown buyer I get a little push back on wanting to use brass hardware in the homes. This is where you come in. I need your honest opinions - do you love, kind of like, or hate brass hardware? Would you put it in your home?

I've been doing a lot of purchasing for my projects. I am kind of a shop-a-holic so this is the best job for me. I can satisfy my need to buy things by doing it for other people! (This is making my husband very happy)

I bought this capiz chandelier for the dining area and I think it will dress up the space just enough, but it's not as fancy as a crystal chandelier. Have I ever told you how much I love West Elm?!

I think they will look really cool - just a little worried about if they will provide enough light...

If you follow me on PINTEREST you will have noticed that lately I'm obsessed with finding lighting for my projects. In my opinion lighting is one of the most important aspects of a home remodel. You can spend all of your time on the floor plan, the tile and paint, kitchen and hardware but if you don't have the right lighting, or cheap lighting it can cheapen the whole house. Adversely, if you spend your money on your lighting and maybe not as much on, let's say tile, you will be amazed at how much the lighting fixtures will make up the difference and then some.

My favorite lighting analogy is that lighting is the accessories of your outfit. You could be wearing head to toe Chanel but if you finish off the outfit with sneakers and a fake pearl necklace it cheapens the whole outfit, whereas if you are wearing jeans and a white t-shirt with a beautiful necklace and nice leather boots or something, you look like a million bucks!

And with all of that said, I am in some major help of narrowing my lighting down. In the dining area I would like to do an oversized lantern, just like this picture...

However, the light fixture just like this one will cost me close to $1000...(although I highly recommend this light if you have the budget for it - I just don't)

BEFORE + AFTERS OF MY LATEST PROJECT

I just finished an investment property project last week and finally got some pictures of it. I will show you before and after pics so you have more of an appreciation of what we were working with. Shiloh Powers of Power Builders was the contractor on this project and truly is a floor plan genius and a great contractor. You can't see it in the pictures, but he makes sure the house is quality from the studs to the moldings. No cutting corners here.

We had a TIGHT BUDGET to work with, so keep that in mind as you look at these pics. Just to give you an idea of what I was working with - my total lighting budget was $500 and all of my tile was under $3 a sq ft. If you ever think you don't have the budget to remodel, I think I can prove you wrong!

Also keep in mind that this is an empty home that would look 100 times better if it was furnished, staged and professionally photographed. Maybe one day I will have the budgets to do all of those things, but in the mean time this is what I've got :)

And now I have to brag a little bit. The realtors listed this house 6 days ago and it went under contract today! Yes, in this down market it is possible to sell a house in less than a week. This made me extremely happy because my client is so pleased. That is always the ultimate goal.

And now we begin...
The EXTERIOR didn't change much. Just touch up paint, a new driveway, and a new front door.

The before pics of this house are kind of sad. It was a nice old woman who lived here and we were happy to give the home the face lift it badly needed. The FRONT ROOM now has nice light and is open to the kitchen with a room off to the side to be used as an office or second bedroom.

I love these WOOD FLOORS. They are solid bamboo which is a plus since bamboo is a renewable and "green" material. They also look and feel great in person.

This room has great natural light. It's my favorite room in the house.

The KITCHEN turned out really nice for the budget we had. This is the one area of the house where it is easy to blow your budget but we were able to get a lot for a little.

We completely tore out the kitchen and moved the wall back a bit to allow for more space and an island.

We discovered this brick wall behind the dry wall and exposed it in it's original condition. I chose the metal shelving instead of another cabinet to keep the kitchen feeling open and to also give it an urban/industrial feel. The sconces are from West Elm and I was really happy with the quality and price.

The countertop was a remnant. I can't remember the color but the brand is Zodiak (similar to Caesarstone). We got a great deal on it and I think the homeowner will be very happy with the durability of this surface.

KITCHEN ISLAND + PENDANTS

The MASTER BEDROOM and BATHROOM were reconfigured so we could get a bigger shower and more storage. The contractor had such vision in configuring the space like he did - making the most of the little space we had.

I am loving the paint color in the bedroom and bathroom. It is Gray Owl from Benjamin Moore. It's a gray/blue paint that isn't too gray or too blue. I highly recommend this paint color.

I decided to go with an outdoor light fixture in the bathroom which turned out better than expected. This light is a Canarm light and is literally from a farm supply store. Yes, it is a real "barn light" but it gives off great light for a bathroom and it worked for the industrial look I was going for. And it was only $35! Can't beat that...

You can see in the picture above that I did go ahead and use the wood floor tile that I was not sure about using (thanks to your feedback). I am really happy with the way this tile looks. I will definitely be using wood floor tile in my future projects.

The mirrors are from Ikea and I liked them so much I bought one for my own guest bathroom!

The master bathroom connects to the guest half bath. There wasn't enough room to do a toilet in the master bath and have a guest bath so we combined them and separated the shower and master vanity (with a door) from the guest half bath.

The BASEMENT was unfinished and looked hopeless when they bought the home. Because the contractor has such great vision he raised the ceilings as much as possible, created a space for a theater room and a nice sized bedroom with a 3/4 bath.

In the basement bathroom I used the old standby white subways but I had them lay vertical instead of horizontal for a more modern look. You can't really tell but the floor tile is a gray 6 x 24 tile. I liked this tile a lot, especially for the $3 a sq ft price.

BUSINESS CARDS + NEW DESIGN

Some of you may notice that I'm constantly changing my blog header and logo. This is a new venture for me and I'm very indecisive as to what I want my logo to be - how do you ever feel like any design is final?!

With that said, I'm working on my business cards and I'm excited to see the finished product because my friend Miranda Anderson will be letter pressing them and she does such a great job. DESIGN BOOK REVIEW: THE PERFECTLY IMPERFECT HOME

I just finished reading Deborah Needleman's design book, THE PERFECTLY IMPERFECT HOME. I absorbed every word in this book and considered myself a more educated designer after reading this book - a feeling I hadn't felt after reading other design books. (The book is $20 from Amazon - buy it here)

Here's why I loved this book:

1. She has practical rules and simple ideas for decorating your home that are easy to remember and incorporate.

2. You don't feel like you need a million dollars to decorate your home and create a nice space.

3. She is a GREAT writer, which makes it easy and enjoyable to read. And the illustrations are a work of art in and of themselves.

4. She has a classy and classic outlook on decorating, and loves a home with a lot of character and humor (which are the best types of homes in my opinion).

5. She has a respect for antiques, but also recommends using postcards and personal snapshots as art.

6. She was the editor for Domino Magazine, still a favorite home decor magazine amongst the design community even though it's been out of print for a couple of years, which in my opinion means she is definitely someone worth listening to.

7. And finally, I found my favorite decorating quote of all time that sums up interior decorating in one sentence..."Simply collecting is not enough; objects are like words that need to be made into meaningful sentences." Genius!!

WEEK IN REVIEW

This past couple of weeks have been crazy busy as I'm sure they have been for everyone else - it's that time of year. Jon and I went to New York City for a long weekend shopping trip and visited one of my best friends. It was my first time to NYC and it was AMAZING! I've never seen so many beautiful stores and such amazing architecture. Unfortunately I spilled O.J. all over my camera the second day there, so no pics to share...

I have also been working on finishing one of my projects which should be done in a couple of weeks. I can't wait to share pictures! Here are a few of the materials I used...

The kitchen opens up into the dining room so I think this will make for a pretty transition from one space into the next. I also love that there is storage on both sides of the cabinet. And notice how the countertop and the cabinets are the same color - it makes the kitchen look more simple and clean.

FLAT FILE CABINETS

I have been trying to put together my home office for the last few months but am so indecisive that I haven't done a thing! I have finally decided on the storage cabinet I want - a flat file cabinet.

Flat file cabinets are typically used in architect and drafting offices, or art schools but they are perfect for the home, and especially interior designers. All of my samples are tile, wood, fabric, and paint swatches which all need to lay flat. I also have a ton of magazine tear-outs and tear sheets. The flat file cabinet allows me to organize all of my projects by drawer and keep everything visible as the drawers are shallow and don't allow me to pile everything on top of each other.

Flat file cabinets are also perfect for organizing and protecting keepsakes. Many of the metal flat file cabinets are available in fire proof material, so you can feel safe storing all of your kids art work, certificates, awards, diploma, pictures, albums, etc. without getting bent and piled on.

I am still searching for the perfect size, but I am hoping to come across a vintage wood cabinet, or I might even buy the Martha Stewart for Home Decorators cabinet. For the price, it's a great one and it has all 5 star reviews.

In my grandparent's condo they had a mirror backsplash in their kitchen. It was a small kitchen, but I always loved the feeling and the look of it - not really knowing why until now!

Having a mirror for a backsplash in a kitchen - especially in small kitchens - is a smart and stylish solution to add a lot style for very little $. It creates a more glamorous, high-end look, but it also makes the space appear more open. Finding a smoky vintage mirror would also look really nice.

As I've been looking for VERY affordable options for one of my projects I came across these porcelain tiles that look like wood flooring. At only $2.80 a sq. ft. it's a great option for my project, but I don't know how I feel about this tile. For my project it would be used in the bathroom. I definitely love this option for a mud room, by the pool, laundry room, or anywhere you will have the surface getting wet but you like the look of wood flooring.

One reason I am liking this tile is because of the color options. I love the "stains" on these wood floors. What do you think? Would you use it in a bathroom?

OUTDOOR LIGHTING INDOORS

I am always looking for an alternative to the classic overhead vanity light fixture. When I saw this picture of the outdoor lamp used as vanity light it got me thinking about using outdoor lighting in the home.

Outdoor lighting is typically cheaper than indoor lighting. It creates an urban + industrial look and there are so many options! I posted a few that I'm thinking of using for one of my projects. It's a little risky and I wonder if it's too unconventional. Any thoughts?

FAMILY ROOM, KITCHEN & BATH PICS OF OUR HOME

So I decided to borrow my sister's camera (who is a photographer) and take a few pics of the house. DISASTER. I am not a photographer at all. She didn't trust me with her super nice lens and flash (which I totally understand - I don't know how to use them), so sans flash, zoom capabilities, and bad lighting this is what I got.

To counter my bad pics I will post the before pictures so mine don't look so bad!

Just a little back history - the house was built in the '50's and didn't have much updating. We hired Tom Fox to head up the construction and he was the genius who really figured out how to create a great floorplan from this awkward home. I thought we all worked really well together. It was a SUPER STRESSFUL remodel as I was pregnant the whole time and we had to move 4 times while it was being remodeled, but we are extremely happy with the end result.

We loved the view and the big windows of this room but it was an awkward space - long and narrow - so we knocked out this wall and extended the house about 300 ft, til the end of the covered porch. The covered porch had a good roof so we were able to use what we already had and didn't have to add on more roof (which is really pricey).


The fireplace had to stay where it was, which was fine, but as you will see in the kitchen pic there is a fireplace on the other side - but they aren't back to back, so it created a somewhat awkward fireplace/bookshelf situation.

The extra sq. footage helped make the space. I love wainscot so we had it done from the floor to the ceiling. Now I need to find some great artwork or a nice mirror for that space...

Because the room is so big we had an extra large couch custom made by Rocky Mountain Upholstery in a stain resistant fabric. I LOVE this fabric - everything has come out and it has a linen look. The pillows are Thom Filicia fabric made by Chelsea Lorimer.

I still need to find fabric for the window seat cushion. The chairs we bought at Home Again and had reupholstered by Rocky Mountain Upholstery. With kids the bleach white fabric was a gamble - but I remove spots with bleach and everything comes out! The roman shades are from Lowe's - they are Balli.

This is just the details of the fireplace. The sconce is from Circa Lighting (my FAV lighting store) and the stone on the fireplace is super white granite left over from the kitchen countertops.

BEFORE

White kitchen w/brass hardware. The backsplash is Thassos marble and the countertops are super white granite (which we have loved because it's not as porous as marble and more stain resistant).

I wanted some open shelving and a farmhouse sink. The sink is from Ikea and hundreds of dollars cheaper than other sinks. Because of the fireplace we had a narrow space for the kitchen which didn't allow for a traditional island. I LOVE this round island we did - it was risky because we hadn't seen it done before - but I love it. It's the perfect prep station.

You can kind of see how we put the bench seat and table on the other side of the counter instead of having the L counter hang over and putting barstools at it.


The kitchen fireplace. I want to add some framed photos on the wall next to the fireplace and do put some sort of decor on the mantel.

We really like having such a big dining space right next to the kitchen so when friends are over we can all fit and be part of the conversation. The table is from Restoration Hardware and the kitchen bench is custom from Rocky Mountain Upholstery


This is the guest bathroom that is right next to the kitchen dining area. Since it was such a small bathroom I wanted to do a more bold wallpaper - this one is Osborn & Little. My daughter calls it the "popcorn flower" bathroom.

I will post more photos as I have the time. I definitely want my professional photographer sister to take the photos next time so they look much better. I just signed up for PINTEREST and I love it. It's the easiest application to use. You download the "Pin It" button onto your Bookmarks (just like Polyvore if you've used that). When you're surfing the web and see something you like you just click the "Pin It" button and it shows you all the photos on that page and you click on the photos you want to save. It then saves it to whatever category you want, such as "For the Home" or "My Style".

Want to know the best part? It saves the website info you got the picture from, so if you are a design blogger or any kind of blogger that needs to give credit for photos, this is a great way of keeping that info. I save a lot of products I like but can't buy right then. That way I can go back to it when I have the money again for a new shirt, chair, etc...

I am reupholstering my sectional that will be in the basement. I'm thinking about upholstering it in a ticking stripe fabric. Here are some inspirational photos. LIVING ROOM RUG

MASTER BEDROOM INSPIRATION

I posted this photo a while back saying I would love to have a room that looked like this, but it's not practical for my life.

I decided I could use this photo as inspiration for our master bedroom. I don't update my bedroom decor ever, so once I decorate our bedroom it probably won't change at all for the next 5 years - so I want to make sure it's not too trendy. What's more timeless than BLACK + WHITE + GOLD?!

Only thing missing is a headboard. I have a headboard I can reupholster, but I'm not sure what material to do. Our bedroom walls are white so I'm thinking a pattern of some sort. Should I go with a black fabric or a gold fabric or something totally different? HELP!

There are a few lighting fixtures I still need to buy. The kitchen light that will hang over the kitchen table is one of them that I can't figure out. Here are some options I'm thinking about. Please tell me what you think.

Our guest bathroom walls will be black wallpaper with a white pedestal sink, somewhat similar to this bathroom. I'm really excited to see how this bathroom is going to turn out.

WALL SCONCE - WHICH ONE?

I'm about to purchase my wall sconces but I can't decide between these two sconces below. One is sixty dollars more than the other one, I won't tell you which one. So my question is, which one do you like better? Would spending the extra money be worth it or are these two similar enough that I should just go for the cheapest one?

I AM AT A LOSS-BASEMENT FLOORING

I was recently told by our tile guy that I have to use porcelain tile in the basement, which changes what we were going to use. Porcelain tile isn't as exciting as stone so I would like to create variation by using a pattern on the floor. Here are a couple ideas. Do either one really work for a basement? It's only going in a small space as you walk in from the outside and it will be continued into the bathroom.

I'm so excited about the antique farmhouse table we found this weekend for a steal of a deal. It's similar to this farmhouse table.

Horchow.com is having a 30 percent off sale so I bought a chandelier to go over the table.

Now I need some chairs and am currently looking at the Restoration Hardware Hudson slipcovered chair in white or grey. Any thoughts? Which color of slipcover would you go with? Should I stay away from a slipcovered chair? Help!

FAV MARBLE - THASSOS

I just discovered Thassos marble - it's an all white marble that's really nothing special, but I love it as an alternative to white porcelain subway tiles. Above is a shower done in Thassos - I think it has a nice clean look, but it still has the look of a marble. I think we are going to do this both in our master bathroom and as the backsplash in our kitchen.

I am really liking the idea of painting all the solid doors in our house black (solid, meaning excluding the french glass doors). I love the contrast with the white walls and accented with the gold hardware.

I really like the whole look in this photo, but especially the floors and the gold hinges and nobs. I am thinking about putting gold nobs and hinges in my house as well. And even though I really like the Walnut stained floors, I think the floors in this photo might be more practical and are also very nice. As always I worry about whether it is a classic enough choice, but I'm pretty sure gold is the most timeless metal of all, so I should be safe...

I took this quiz on My Design Guide to see what they would categorize my style as. Here are the results...
So I guess my style is mainly Coastal, with a mix of Modern, Romantic and Asian. Great, not only do I look Asian, I have Asian style! I guess I do gravitate towards the Eastern influence. I'm not totally surprised since my Grandma has many Asian antique pieces in her home and I do love her style.

But I am really going to have to talk to my Mom (one day) about who my real father is because I'm pretty sure he's part Asian - jk, dad :)

POOL + GRASS

Next to our pool is a large area of cement. Yesterday as we looked at what we wanted to do with the backyard, Jon and I decided we definitely wanted to add more grass to the backyard. I was thinking about extending the grass all the way up to the pool like they do in these pics...what do you think? Do you know if it gets muddy and gross with the grass so close to the pool?

I found this photo - I'm not sure where - and it's the perfect inspiration for our basement great room. Right next to the sliding door to the outside/pool is a cement shelf that I will need to turn into a bench to make it look like it's supposed to be there.

I am wanting to do tile because people will be walking in from the outside wet and muddy from the pool and grass. I know it's not the softest surface to hang out on, but it might be the most practical option. And in this chevron pattern - it's way cute!

I like white subway tile backspashes for the kitchen, but it's trendy and a little over used. What do you think about this slight spin on a white tile backsplash? The grout is darker and the shape of the tiles are a little different. I kind of like it...

My latest stress, (besides moving, of course) has been what to choose for the wood flooring. And then I saw this picture with these gorgeous wood floors and my worries went away. I think this is a Walnut finish, and I'm not sure about what type of wood it is, but I love it and I'm sure a flooring expert can match it. Right?!

One concern remains...do you think this stain is a little too dark and will show dust, dirt, etc.? Or do you think it's just light enough that it shouldn't show too much...

PHILLIP MITCHELL

I am loving this fireplace mantel and woodwork. It looks a little bit messy in this picture, but I really like the built in bookshelves and that center piece above the fireplace. This would totally work in the front room of the new house (as long as it fit in the budget).

What do you think? Is it too messy, not a clean enough look? Or does it add a lot of character to a house that doesn't have any?

KITCHEN ENTRANCE

ELLE DECOR

Trying to reconfigure the space in the home has been tricky and the only solution for increasing the kitchen space was to move the entrance from the garage a few feet and get rid of the half bath and laundry room and use that space for the kitchen. If all of these things are done, then the entrance from the garage will go directly into the kitchen, similar to this photo.

What do you think about walking right into the kitchen from the garage? How necessary is a mud room space? Maybe it's more convenient to walk right into the kitchen (for groceries, etc)

I spotted this pic and it get me thinking...what about two kitchen islands like they have in this kitchen? That way if your husband, kids, friends, parents are helping with food prep you can each have a prep area on your own island. KIDS BATHROOM

I am excited to design the kids bathroom, but it might also serve as the guest bathroom as well. Can I go somewhat kiddie themed if it's the guest bathroom as well, or would you go more neutral because guests will be using it?

the only thing I like in this picture is the tub/shower. I have a personal aversion to purple

I can't tell if I love this bathroom or that cute little girl wiping her face (I imagine it's Caroline 2 years from now). I wouldn't do the coral color, but I love the turquoise and gray combo. I also like that it looks like a kids bathroom but is still stylish.

Durat is also a great option that is environmentally friendly and can be sanded down if any wear starts to show. I love the clean look of this countertop as opposed to granite.

I love dutch doors! We stayed in a home in Coronado, CA that had a dutch door for the front door and I loved it. We could have the top half open for some air, we could answer the door without the kids or dog running outside. It was great. I'm seriously considering a dutch door for the front entry door. What do you think? You don't see these doors very often and I'm wondering if that's for a reason...

WOLF RANGE

WOLF 36" GAS RANGE

I have done a bit of research on the best gas cooktops and electric ovens and it seems like the WOLF gets the best overall ratings. Any opinions out there on the WOLF or other gas ranges? How important do you think a double oven is? I don't cook much as of right now, so I'm not sure. I think the 36" is the best option for our kitchen since space is somewhat limited. What do you think?

CURB APPEAL

Today was our last day to back out of this house due to inspection, and since the inspection went well, we are on our way to closing on this house. As we have thought more about the house we decided we really want to spend some of our $ on the curb appeal. We will have to get bids to see how much it will cost to change the outside, but hopefully we can do some things to make it more of a New England style.

On the back porch we currently have white awning, but I love this striped awning. My only concern is if it's classic enough, and if it would be distracting. I really like all the colors in this photo though. Can you tell I'm in to WHITE, GRAY AND BLUE?

Last night I was invited to a BBQ by a couple who just renovated a home. It was so helpful to talk to someone who had just recently done a remodel. She had great tips and ideas. But it also got me anxious about all the decisions I need to make VERY soon. She suggested I start with the lighting. I'm not sure why, but I will take her word for it. For the front room, which will be the semi-formal living room, I really like the idea of using either GRAY + WHITE or BLUE + WHITE as the dominant colors (with gold accents, of course). Can I can mix the two?

In the picture right below you can see the end of a beautiful navy blue chaise lounge that I would give my right arm for. Below that is the fabulous Restoration Hardware sofa that comes in this ultra stain resistant fabric that might be worth the splurge. It comes in other colors, but I like the color pictured best. It might look a little brownish-gray in the photo, but I'm pretty sure it's a true gray.

So I love both of these pieces equally. Can they live together in harmony? I ask, because there is no other room in the house that these two pieces would make sense.

DECISION NUMERO UNO: Who to use for kitchen design / cabinetry / appliances / flooring / windows / tile / wallpaper / woodwork...

Do you have any good references for any of the above needs? We need to start looking at kitchen cabinets / flooring / tile / appliances, etc. pretty soon. I guess a lot of those decisions need to be made BEFORE we start construction because it takes a while to order them in.

We are in a middle price range and of course want the best price possible for the highest quality possible. Your help is appreciated! And if it's easier to simply email me rather than comment, that's fine too!

GOOD NEWS! WE ARE UNDER CONTRACT

We are finally under contract on a home! It has been a 2 year process (because we are picky and indecisive) but we found "the one" for us. The house needs A LOT of work so I created this blog in hopes that family and friends can help me, Miss Indecisive, make all the decisions that go into a major remodel.

Below are the pictures of the home. Keep in mind we are REMODELING, but the house has potential (we hope!).

And FYI: I named this blog WHITE + GOLD because those are my two favorite colors. I had to add "design" because whiteandgold.blogspot.com was taken. Don't worry, I know I'm not a designer, nor do I have unreal expectations of becoming one, but since the blog is about design it made sense.
